The borough is frequently described as raw and authentic, home to many hard-working New Yorkers, with art<\/a>, music, and culture clearly visible as part of everyday life. The Bronx is also the birthplace of hip-hop and salsa and is known for its strong cultural identity and sense of pride.<\/p>\n

Another popular spot is Arthur Avenue, also known as Little Italy in The Bronx. This street is famous for its traditional Italian shops, markets, and restaurants and is often considered the most authentic Little Italy in New York. Compared to Little Italy in Manhattan\u2014which is small and heavily focused on tourism\u2014Arthur Avenue feels more local and less commercial.<\/p>\n

During my visits to New York, I\u2019ve been to The Bronx several times. As in other parts of the city, the atmosphere and safety here vary by neighborhood. Manhattan is often seen as the most tourist-friendly borough, followed by Brooklyn. In The Bronx, there are also neighborhoods\u2014such as the South Bronx, Mott Haven, Hunts Point, and Fordham\u2014where higher crime rates occur and which are less focused on tourism.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

That does not mean The Bronx is unsafe for visitors. The areas that tourists typically visit are generally fine to explore, especially during the daytime. Around well-known attractions such as Yankee Stadium, Arthur Avenue (Little Italy in The Bronx), the Bronx Zoo, and the New York Botanical Garden, the atmosphere is lively, with many locals and tourists present every day.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Personally, I have never felt unsafe during my visits to The Bronx. During my visit in the summer of 2025, it was also noticeable that parts of the borough\u2014particularly in the South Bronx\u2014are visibly changing due to large-scale urban renewal and improvements in livability and safety.<\/p>\n
