New York Info
Shopping in New York is a lot of fun, but there are so many shopping opportunities that it would take years to explore every square meter of retail space. To help you choose the best place to enjoy a day of shopping in New York during your city break, I’ve listed the best shopping streets in this blog post.
Shopping in New York
Shopping in New York is a lot of fun and sometimes cheaper or more expensive than you’re used to in your own country. And you often find products that are only available in America. Fortunately, you never have to search far for the most exclusive shops in New York, because all sorts of shopping areas are hidden around the city’s most popular attractions, with stores like Macy’s, Bergdorf Goodman, Tiffany & Co., Prada, Chanel, Coach, H&M, and the Nike store.
Shopping in SoHo
Shopping in SoHo should definitely be part of your New York vacation. SoHo light between Houston Street, Canal Street, Sixth Avenue and Lafayette Street. And the buildings in SoHo are known for their atmospheric appearance with streets of clinker bricks. In SoHo you will not only find very nice little shops but also shops of popular brands, such as Prada, Chanel, Coach, H&M, Alex & Ani and Victoria’s Secret. It is best to go shopping in SoHo on a weekday because it can be very busy in SoHo on weekends.
Shopping in New York on Broadway
Broadway is one of the best places to shop in New York, because Broadway is not only home to many theaters but also to many shops. The Broadway shopping street is over twenty kilometers long and extends all the way to Manhattan Island. Broadway is home to several stores of popular brands, such as Banana Republic, Levi’s, H&M, Tommy Hilfiger, Prada, and many more.
Broadway is also home to a huge Nike store with five floors full of sneakers and sportswear. In this Nike store, you can find many Nike shoes that are only sold in the United States and not available online in Europe.
Shopping in the Meatpacking District
The Meatpacking District is a great starting point for a fun day of shopping in New York. In the charming shops, you’ll find original items you won’t find in Europe. The Meatpacking District in New York is located in the borough of Manhattan, which runs from West 14th Street to Gansevoort Street, and from the Hudson River to Hudson Street.
Shopping in New York on Fifth Avenue
Shopping in New York on Fifth Avenue and Madison Avenue is the best option if you like luxury brands. Fifth Avenue and Madison Avenue run parallel to each other and are among the most expensive shopping streets in New York. These shopping streets mainly contain stores from major designers, such as Calvin Kleina and Prada. And on Fifth Avenue you will also find several large luxury department stores, such as Bergdorf Goodman and Saks. But even if the shops are out of your budget and you can only do window shopping, Fifth Avenue is still worth walking through.
Apple Store in New York
Fifth Avenue is also home to the largest and most famous Apple Store in the world. In this beautiful store you can buy the latest Apple products, such as an iPhone or iPad. And whether you are a fan or not, the Apple store is a must visit during your city trip to New York.
Shopping in New York at Times Square
Shopping in New York on Times Square during your city trip to New York is really great. On Times Square you will find many shops of popular brands, such as;
1. Forever 21 (trendy clothing store for the real shop-aholic) 2. M&M Mega Store (if you like sweets) 3. Hershey’s Chocolate World (chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate) 4. Tasty D-light (delicious low-calorie ice cream, delicious in the summer) 5. Crumbs Bake Shop (cupcakes and other delicious pastries)
Shopping at Macy's in New York
If you’re going shopping in New York, you absolutely have to visit Macy’s. Macy’s is the largest department store in New York, occupying the entire block of Herald Square and boasting eleven floors. At Macy’s, you’ll find the most well-known fashion brands like Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren. Macy’s also offers a wide selection of sportswear and homewares.
Shop at Woodbury Common Premium Outlet
If you really want to spend a day shopping in New York and benefit from great discounts on designer brands, visit the Woodbury Common Premium Outlet in New York. At Woodbury Common Premium Outlet you will find more than 240 stores, all offering significant discounts on designer brands.
Opening hours of the stores in New York
The opening hours of the stores in New York vary. Some stores such as so-called “delis” are often open 24 hours a day. These are the stores where you sell food, drinks and drugstore items. Most other stores open their doors between 8 and 10 am and close again between 9 – 10 pm.
Is shopping in New York worth it?
I’ve been to New York several times in recent years. During these stays, I’ve shopped in many different neighborhoods. Each neighborhood has something for everyone, from large department stores on Fifth Avenue to small boutiques in Brooklyn. Prices are often higher than in many other European countries, but you can find good deals during sales or in outlets. It can also get very crowded in some areas, but if you go shopping in New York in the morning or during the week, it’s often much quieter and definitely worth it.
My tips about shopping in New York
Finally, here are some practical tips that can help you while shopping:
1. Go on a weekday or early in the day: This way you’ll avoid the biggest crowds.
2. Pay attention to taxes: Sales tax is added to the price at the checkout.
3. Visit lesser-known neighborhoods: Williamsburg and Nolita have unique shops and are quieter.
4. Check for discounts beforehand: You can save a lot online or at outlets like Woodbury Common.
