For many travelers, a visit to Liberty Island is part of a trip to New York City. This small island, best known for the famous Statue of Liberty, is a place of great history and significance. But is it really worth making time for it during your stay in New York? In this blog, read everything you need to know before you decide.
The history of Liberty Island in New York
Liberty Island has a long and interesting history. Once known as Bedloe’s Island, it was used as a defensive post. In the 19th century, France donated the Statue of Liberty to the United States as a symbol of freedom and friendship. Since 1886, the statue has stood proudly on the island and welcomes millions of visitors each year.
Over the years, Liberty Island grew into an important national monument. Not only the statue itself, but the site on which it stands reminds visitors of freedom, immigration and America’s history. Today, the island is part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument and is under the protection of the National Park Service. As a result, the island remains well preserved and you can visit it safely.
What sights are there on Liberty Island
Most people go to Liberty Island to visit the Statue of Liberty, but there are other attractions on the island that are really worth seeing. Below are the six most popular spots that you should definitely not miss while visiting Liberty Island.
1. The Statue of Liberty (Statue of Liberty).
This is undoubtedly the most famous attraction on the island. The statue, designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, symbolizes freedom and hope. Visitors can take the stairs or elevator to the observation deck atop the pedestal. To get there, you must climb 215 flights of stairs, or do part of the climb by elevator.
At the Liberty Island Museum, you will learn about the construction and history of the Statue of Liberty in a clear and fun way. The museum features original drawings, old photographs and special parts of the statue itself. For example, you can see the original torch of the Statue of Liberty up close. This torch was replaced in 1984, but remains an impressive symbol of light and freedom.
There is also a replica of the statue’s face, so you can get a good look at how big it really is. The copper base of the Statue of Liberty has also been recreated. This will give you a better idea of the dimensions and craftsmanship it took to create this world-famous work of art.
Don’t forget to climb to the roof of the museum. From this vantage point you have a beautiful panorama of the Statue of Liberty, New York Harbor and the Manhattan skyline. Especially in clear weather, the view is impressive and perfect for photos.
3. The Sculptor's Studio (Replica Studio).
In this room, located inside the museum, you can see how the Statue of Liberty was once designed and built. There are scale models and replicas of parts of the statue, so you can clearly see how much work and craftsmanship went into the project. The exhibit shows step by step how the statue was made in France and then brought to America.
4. The Promenade around the Island
A walk along the boardwalk is highly recommended. From here you have a panoramic view of Ellis Island, Lower Manhattan and the Brooklyn Bridge. Personally, I thought this was one of the most fun things to do on the island, mainly because I was able to take many great photos and enjoy the beautiful view of the Manhattan skyline.
5. The Picnic Area and Viewpoint
For those who want to relax for a while, there is a special area with benches and tables. Here you can sit quietly and enjoy the view of the Hudson River. Many visitors bring their lunch to enjoy the surroundings in peace. I myself had bought a delicious bagel in Manhattan and took it with me for lunch on the island.
6. Flagpole Plaza
Flagpole Plaza is Liberty Island’s central square where the American flag flies proudly. From here you have a great view of the Statue of Liberty and the surrounding area. On sunny days, soft music often sounds and visitors gather here to rest or take photos.
The plaza is also a place of historical significance. It is a reminder of the role that freedom and equality play in the history of the United States. It is especially impressive here during national holidays, such as Independence Day.
Where is Liberty Island located in New York?
Liberty Island is located in New York Harbor, between Manhattan and New Jersey. Although the island is geographically closer to New Jersey, it officially falls under New York State. From Battery Park in Manhattan, you can already clearly see the island, especially on clear days.
How do you get to Liberty Island?
To visit Liberty Island, take the ferry from Statue City Cruises. It departs from Battery Park in Manhattan or Liberty State Park in New Jersey. The crossing takes about 15 to 20 minutes. During the boat ride, you can already enjoy stunning views of the New York skyline. Waiting times at security checkpoints can sometimes be a bit longer, so plan plenty of time. Tickets are best reserved online in advance, especially during the summer months.
An average visit to Liberty Island takes between two and three hours. If you also want to see the museum and the Statue of Liberty itself, it’s better to take some extra time. Like many other visitors, I also combined my visit with a trip to Ellis Island, which you can reach by the same ferry. Then count on about half a day in total.
What is the best time to visit Liberty Island
The best time to visit Liberty Island is in spring or fall. During these seasons, the weather is often pleasant and the queues are shorter. If you like quieter times, it is best to visit the island early in the morning. The first ferries are usually the least crowded, allowing you to walk around and take pictures in peace.
During the summer months it is busier, but the view is often clear then. In winter it is quieter, although the winds on the island can be quite cold.
What happens to the Statue of Liberty during a shutdown?
The Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island is one of New York’s most famous attractions. Nevertheless, the statue may be temporarily closed, such as during a federal shutdown. During a shutdown, many government services are temporarily shut down, including the National Park Service, which is responsible for managing Liberty Island.
When this happens, ferries to Liberty Island are not always available and visitors cannot enter the island or the Statue of Liberty. The museum, pedestal and observation deck are also closed then. Visitors in that case can only take photos from a distance from Battery Park or Liberty State Park.
Therefore, it is important to check your visit in advance. On the official websites of Statue City Cruises or the National Park Service, you can see if the Statue of Liberty is open. That way, you avoid standing in front of a closed gate and you can plan your visit for another day if necessary.
So during a shutdown, it’s not possible to see the iconic statue up close, but you can still enjoy the view of New York Harbor from the shore.
Is Liberty Island worth a visit?
I have visited Liberty Island several times and personally, I think it is definitely worth visiting this special island. But there is so much to see in New York, and if you are only in the city for 3-4 days, I recommend booking a Circle Line Sightseeing boat tour. This will also allow you to admire the Statue of Liberty up close in 1.5 to 2 hours.
If you go to New York for more than 4 days, be sure to visit Liberty Island, preferably in combination with Ellis Island.
My tips for visiting Liberty Island
Based on my experiences, I share a few practical tips for visiting Liberty Island in New York.
1. Book your tickets early. Booking online saves time and avoids disappointment. Actually, this applies to all attractions in New York. Book your tickets on time, because if you want to buy them on the spot, you run the risk of ending up in a long queue at the ticket office, which can sometimes take several hours.
2. Go out early. The first boat is usually the quietest. Personally, I do this at many sights in New York because it not only gives you time to look around quietly, but also to take nice pictures without crowds of tourists in your picture.
3. Bring water and snacks. There are dining options, but they can be pricey.
4. Also visit Ellis Island. I did this myself, and I recommend it to everyone. With the same ticket, you can visit Ellis Island and discover how emigrants used to arrive in New York.
